Lightning Strikes Twice. So Rare.

I was treated to a second Island Record of Ruff today.  Which is actually even rarer than a first island record bird if you think about it, because it's like lightning striking twice in the same spot.  This is a phenomenon describable only using Bradian Statistics.  Also, there are a bunch of E-seals that you all forgot about since last year.

Ruff.  Like lightning.  Hopefully this bird will stick and I'll get better shots of it.  

Blueberry Scones

I have absolutely nothing to say about yesterday.  Here are the photos.

When there are no birds around, shoot the E seals.  This is a foolproof plan and works every time.  This one is so cute that she even has a pink heart shaped scar on her lip.

It has come to this.  I have resorted to posting Western Gull photos.  30,000 of them breed here.  Somebody counted them all.

More Fogging Fog

Fog conspired against us again yesterday and prevented migrants from finding the Island.  I barely managed to take two usable photographs.  Again, they are of the non-bird variety.

First up, we have a Spot-Winged Glider, cooperatively perched on the Rixford Tree.  These dragonflies showed up in numbers on Thursday and were still lingering around the Island yesterday.

This is how Elephant Seals sometimes sleep.  This one was catching some R&R down at Mussel Flat yesterday.  I think they must only need to breathe once an hour or so.  Can you imagine sleeping underwater?

SEFI E-Seals

I borrowed Jim's camera yesterday and headed down to Sewer Gulch to get some shots of the bull Elephant Seals.  There are a bunch of them on the island now, but they will soon head out to sea for the remainder of the fall and won't return until around December. 

This reminds me of that giant snail thing from The Never Ending Story.

Notice their mouths pretty much make a heart.  Cuteness.
